Learning Goals for Rotation One

Learning GoalsBy the end of this rotation I will be able to:

  • investigate and identify the physical and chemical properties of substances
  • plan and conduct an inquiry into the properties of common substances
  • conduct tests to identify gases, liquids and solids
  • use appropriate terms to describe elements and compounds
  • describe the physical and chemical properties of common elements and compounds
Activity One: Classifying Matter

Please read the Classifying Matter note.  You may highlight any points that you need to.  Please put this note into your binder.  Complete the questions at the end.  Please do a self assessment with the answer key and do a reflection on your next steps – what could you have done better and how will you change this in your work next time.

Activity Two: Physical and Chemical Properties

Please log into the virtual classroom and go to the Physical and Chemical Properties Activity.  Please take any jot notes that you may need to reference later.  Please complete the physical and chemical change worksheet.  .  Please do a self assessment with the answer key and do a reflection on your next steps – what could you have done better and how will you change this in your work next time.

Activity Three: Physical and Chemical Properties Virtual Lab

** This is a SmartBoard activity.  You need to work together on the lab and complete the questions as an individual.

Please log into the virtual classroom and complete the virtual lab.  Use the observations sheet to collect your observations and complete the analysis questions.  Please do a self assessment with the answer key and do a reflection on your next steps – what could you have done better and how will you change this in your work next time.

Activity Four: WHMIS Safety

** Please grab the USB stick from Ms Faulkner – go into the Biology room and connect the netbook to the SmartBoard and speakers.

Please complete the WHMIS training session as a group.  Complete all pieces and internal quizzes.  After the training complete the WHMIS quiz (BY YOURSELF!!) and submit to Ms Faulkner.

Activity Five: Physical and Chemical Change Lab

Details to follow!

Activity Six: Density as a Properties of Matter

Please read the Density as a Property of Matter note.  You may highlight any points that you need to.  Please put this note into your binder.

  1. Find the density of 4 objects using the displacement and overfill methods. These objects can be any found object.  Use a chart like this…
Object Method Used Mass Volume

  1. Complete the density questions. Please do a self assessment with the answer key and do a reflection on your next steps – what could you have done better and how will you change this in your work next time.
